Why we chose not to use Starlink on our camping trips.

No question, SpaceX’s satellite-based internet solution Starlink is great technology, but it didn’t work for us, and here’s why:  after trying it for 30 days we realized that, unless we parked our RV in wide open spaces, the connectivity was only 25%. And because of that low connectivity rate, we could not stream TV or do Zoom calls without constant buffering and lost connections. It has always been our preference is to park in and amongst the trees whenever possible, so this didn’t work for us. We love the beauty of the trees and the coolness provided by their shade.

What we chose instead, and have been using successfully for the past 6 years on the road, is cellular streaming.

When it comes to RV camping, connecting with nature is undoubtedly the primary goal. However, there’s no reason to miss out on your favorite shows and movies during your adventures. And as full-time, work from home RV’ers, we needed the assurance of internet connectivity. In this blog, we’ll explore how a Roku (or Firestick) streaming device paired with a reliable cellular hotspot (ATT, Verizon and T-Mobile have good cellular internet services) and a WeBoost (or HiBoost) signal amplifier can provide you with great TV entertainment and internet connectivity while on the road, and at a reasonable cost.

1.    Uninterrupted Streaming Anywhere there is a cell signal

With a portable hotspot, you can access the internet from almost anywhere, even in most remote campsites. This means you can set up your Roku device and stream your favorite content without worrying about Wi-Fi availability or relying on limited campground connections.

2.    Stay Updated and Entertained:

Having a Roku streaming device in your RV allows you to stay updated with current events (for us, we like Sling for live content) and enjoy your preferred entertainment during downtime. Whether it’s catching up on the latest news, binging your favorite series, or watching family-friendly movies, Roku’s vast selection of streaming apps has something for everyone.

3.    Easy Setup and User-Friendly Interface:

Setting up a Roku device is a breeze. Just connect it to your RV’s TV, via HDMI, power it up, and follow the on-screen instructions. The user-friendly interface makes navigation simple, even for those less tech-savvy. With a few clicks, you’ll be ready to stream and relax.

4.    Embrace the Outdoor Cinema:

With a Roku and a projector, you can create an outdoor cinema experience right outside your RV. Find a suitable surface, set up the projector, and enjoy movies under the stars. It’s an excellent way to bond with friends and family while embracing the beauty of nature.

5.    Streaming Options for All Tastes:

From popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ to sports channels and educational content, Roku offers an extensive range of options to cater to your diverse entertainment needs Whether you’re a movie enthusiast, sports fan, or looking to learn something new, there’s a streaming channel for you.

6.    Compact and Space-Saving:

Both Roku streaming devices (even our Roku Sound Bar) and portable hotspots are compact and space-saving, making them perfect companions for your RV adventures. They won’t clutter your limited living space and are easy to pack up when you’re ready to hit the road again.

  1. When cellular signals are weak, the WeBoost directional amplifier can add 3 bars to the signal going to the hotspot. For maximum effect we put the indoor antenna as far from the WeBoost outdoor antenna as we could (which is recommended by WeBoost). We used Velcro to mount the hotspot to the face of the indoor antenna (some of the indoor antennas have limited signal strength, so having the hotspot on the antenna guarantees the best reception).

  1. Of course, there are times that we are so remote that even cellular signal is non-existent. Amplifying the signal will have no effect (5×0 is still 0). In that case we either pay for the Wifi offered by the RV park or we just enjoy the outdoors and snuggle up with a good audio book.

Conclusion:

Incorporating a Roku streaming device and a reliable hotspot into your RV camping setup can truly transform your outdoor experience. From unwinding with your favorite shows to creating a memorable outdoor cinema, the possibilities are endless. Embrace the best of both worlds by staying connected with your loved ones while immersing yourself in the wonders of nature. Happy camping and happy streaming!
